Canonical and gravitational stress-energy tensors

چکیده

It is dealt with the question, under which circumstances the canonical Noether stress-energy tensor is equivalent to the gravitational (Hilbert) tensor for general matter fields under the influence of gravity. In the framework of general relativity, the full equivalence is established for matter fields that do not couple to the metric derivatives. Spinor fields are included into our analysis by reformulating general relativity in terms of tetrad fields, and the case of Poincaré gauge theory, with an additional, independent Lorentz connection, is also investigated. Special attention is given to the flat limit, focusing on the expressions for the matter field energy (Hamiltonian). The DiracMaxwell system is investigated in detail, with special care given to the separation of free (kinetic) and interaction (or potential) energy. Moreover, the stress-energy tensor of the gravitational field itself is briefly discussed. PACS: 04.50.+h, 04.20.Fy

Gauge Invariant Effective Stress-energy Tensors for Gravitational Waves

It is shown that if a generalized definition of gauge invariance is used, gauge invariant effective stress-energy tensors for gravitational waves and other gravitational perturbations can be defined in a much larger variety of circumstances than has previously been possible. In particular it is no longer necessary to average the stress-energy tensor over a region of spacetime which is larger in...

Two formalisms , one renormalized stress - energy tensor

We explicitly compare the structure of the renormalized stress-energy tensor of a massless scalar field in a ð1þ 1Þ curved spacetime as obtained by two different strategies: normal-mode construction of the field operator and one-loop effective action. We pay special attention to where and how the information related to the choice of vacuum state in both formalisms is encoded. By establishing a ...

Expressions for the stress and elasticity tensors for angle-dependent potentials.

The stress and elasticity tensors for interatomic potentials that depend explicitly on bond bending and dihedral angles are derived by taking strain derivatives of the free energy. The resulting expressions can be used in Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations in the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. These expressions are particularly useful at low temperatures where it is difficu...

Quasi-local definitions of energy in general relativity

Defining energy is a surprisingly difficult problem in general relativity. For instance, the energy density of the gravitational field of a planet at a particular point could be determined by a comoving observer measuring the kinetic energy of a freely falling object. Due to the equivalence principle both the object and the observer fall at equal rates. Therefore, the observer would not assign ...

A Proposal for Determining the Energy Content of Gravitational Waves by Using Approximate Symmetries of Differential Equa-

Since gravitational wave spacetimes are time-varying vacuum solutions of Einstein’s field equations, there is no unambiguous means to define their energy content. However, Weber and Wheeler had demonstrated that they do impart energy to test particles. There have been various proposals to define the energy content but they have not met with great success. Here we propose a definition using “sli...
